Muhafaza

The Lebanese muhafazah (محافظة) is an administrative division of Lebanon (first level) which does not have the legal personality. In September 2017 there were nine, they are generally subdivided into kaza-s (قضاء).

Each muhafazah is headed by a muhafiz, appointed by decree of the Council of Ministers. He is hierarchically subordinate to the Minister of the Interior.

During September 2017, the number of muhafazah-s increased from eight to nine, with the creation of an additional, Kesrouane Al Fatouh-Jbeil (law 52 07-09-2017).
